I speak to so many distraught working mums. They are distraught because they want to play an active part in getting their kids to and from school. They want to be there to experience those special childhood moments, to offer a hug of reassurance, to squeeze their child’s hand as they get to grips with the challenges of early school life.

Many of these mums have already had to endure dropping their siblings off with a child minder through the pre-school days. They describe the heart wrenching moments when they look at their watch and they know that someone else is picking their child up from school that day.

As I consider some of these very sad stories, I sometimes feel the tears of frustration well up inside of me. It is especially frustrating when I also hear many mums only work in order to earn an extra £400 per month. I hear so many stories of how mums have to sacrifice these irretrievable and precious childhood moments because they need to help keep the household bills in check, they want to earn extra money to contribute towards a family holiday or those important gifts at Christmas.

Many mums also have a desire to ensure their brain is working, they want to be intellectually challenged and enjoy some adult interaction.

My frustration comes because I know that many mums could create better life circumstances. They could win that work life balance they so desire.

How do I know this? I know this because it is what I have achieved. I have a close to perfect work life balance – by my own personal definition of what a work life balance should be. This balance is, of course, different for all of us.

And, most importantly, there is nothing special about me. I have not done anything that other people could not replicate. I just have an extra ordinary desire to be in control of my own destiny. That really is what much of my progress is down to. I’m not prepared to drift and hope through life. I prefer to plan and navigate.

As I write this blog, I recall the stories I’ve witnessed about mums searching for flexible jobs – something that could fit around spare time and leave precious family time unaffected. I also hear the sad stories of how many of these flexible job hunting endeavours have drawn a total blank.

If the above words and the life circumstances that I outline fit a suitable description of you, then I can tell you categorically that your story is certainly not new to me. You are not alone in either these circumstances or these feelings.

The good news is that there is a way forward for you. There are options for you – and I would be happy to share the detail of: a) what I do and b) how I do it.

When I first talk to people about the opportunity that I can offer, many are understandably curious and maybe even sceptical.

That’s ok. That’s totally normal and I actually encourage a cautious approach to any career route or business opportunity.
